Rev. Samuel Clark, former chaplain of Oxford College of Emory University, will return to the campus Thursday, March 26, to deliver the 2009 Samuel W. Mills Peace Lecture. This program series was established by John A. Mills III and Elizabeth W. Mills, parents of Sam Mills, an Oxford alumnus who was killed on bicycling accident in 1986, his senior year at Emory College. Newton County School System students win numerous awards at Regional Science Fair

Newton County School System students represented the school district extremely well at the recent Griffin RESA Regional Science Fair held on Feb. 27, with 23 coming home with either first, second or third place awards. The Newton County students competed against students from Fayette, Henry, Griffin-Spalding, Butts, Pike, Lamar and Thomaston Upson county schools. All first place winners and alternates will proceed to the state competition, which will be held at the University of Georgia on April 1-4.

Newton High School received AP teacher training grant

Students at Newton High School will have more Advanced Placement (AP) classes to choose from next school year. NHS administrators recently learned that the school was selected as a recipient of a 2009 AP Teacher Training Grant in the amount of $1,500 from the Georgia Department of Education. The funds are earmarked for AP training for teachers.

The Newton County School System is pleased to announce that Dennis Carpenter has been named Deputy Superintendent for Operations for the school district. The Newton County School Board approved by unanimous vote, the recommendation by school superintendent Dr. Steve Whatley, at the March 17 monthly meeting. Carpenter currently serves as the school district's associate superintendent for human resources.

Elks Hoops Shoot winners: East Newton Elementary student Hunter Phillips placed first in the 10-and 11-year-old boys' group, while Ficquett Elementary student Jemelia Evans was the second place winner in the 8-and 9 -year-old girls' group.
