Man arrested after scissors stabbing

A 28-year-old man remains incarcerated at the Newton County Detention Center after being arrested Wednesday evening for allegedly stabbing someone in the head with a pair of scissors.

Officers from the Covington Police Department were called to a home on Clane Drive in reference to a man being stabbed. When they arrived they reportedly found some people standing on the porch waving their arms for help and when officers walked up to the house they found a man sitting there holding a bloody towel against the left side of his head.

Top Brass

Band of brothers: The Jazz Guardians, part of the Army Ground Forces Band based out of Fort McPherson, performed Thursday on the square in Newton County. The band dazzled the audience with an excited, practiced performance. Every Thursday during the month of September, the Arts Association of Newton County will sponsor a luncheon concert on the square. The events are free and begin at noon.

Fuel failure

The Covington Municipal Airport once again ran low on fuel, and it appears airport operator Dixie Jet Services may have run out of second chances.

The Covington City Council has again summoned the company, this time to its Sept. 8 council meeting, to discuss a failure to maintain an adequate supply of Jet A aviation fuel. Jet fuel is similar to highly purified kerosene.

GBI nabs 3 for Section 8 voucher fraud

Three Newton County residents have been arrested and warrants are outstanding for five more on charges that they fraudulently obtained federal money in the way of Section 8 vouchers. There have been 65 arrests state-wide in what the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is calling Operation Clean House.
