‘Swinging for Sight’

The Oxford Lions Club is hosting its first golf tournament, "Swinging for Sight" on March 26 at the Oaks Golf Course. The entry fee of $75 for each player includes green fee, cart, lunch, beverages and prizes. There is a $10,000 prize for a hole-in-one on a par 3 hole. Lunch and registration begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. All of the proceeds from the event will raise funds for sight-related charities supported by the club.

Little Mr. and Miss Newton County

The 49th Annual Little Mr. and Miss Newton County Pageant was a great success last Saturday with 10 beautiful little girls and six handsome young men competing for the crowns in the Alcovy High School auditorium. Colorful ice cream cone balloons decked the stage as part of the "Ice Cream Dreams! Kids Scream for Ice Cream" theme this year.

Former Chamber President Kip Purvis dies

Former Newton County Chamber of Commerce President Kip Purvis died suddenly Sunday at his home from a heart attack. Kip was a member of GEDA and had been the director of the Meriwether County Development Authority for the past ten years. Kip was the President of the Covington/Newton County Chamber of Commerce in the mid-late 1990s.

After losing her job and being evicted from her apartment, Sabrina Ortiz now calls The Garden of Gethsemane Homeless Shelter in Covington her home. As part of a DeKalb Technical College cosmetology department project called "From Our Hearts to Yours" she recently received an eyebrow wax, a facial, hair styling and color as well as a manicure and pedicure.

Shipmate scouts

In the Navy: Cub Scout Pack 2291 recently relived a part of history when they participated in the camping program aboard the World War II Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston Harbor. The scouts became "shipmates" with other youth as they toured the USS Yorktown, the submarine USS Clamagore, the Medal of Honor Museum, and the Vietnam Era Naval Support Base.
