All GPC classes after 5 p.m. canceled

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a winter weather advisory for snow, which is in effect Tuesday from noon to midnight.

Rain will change over to snow early Tuesday morning in the west and hold off until afternoon in the east. Once the snow begins accumulations of up to 1 inch can be expected across the advisory area. Snow will begin to taper off late Tuesday into Tuesday night.

Healthy Hearts Ball

More than a dozen pre-K boys and girls dressed up and escorted their parents to the Healthy Hearts Ball at Middle Ridge Elementary School Friday morning. The ball was held as part of American Heart Month and helped to educate the students on keeping their hearts healthy by exercising and eating right.

2010 Georgia Centennial Farm Deadline is April 30

The Georgia Centennial Farm Program was created to draw attention to historic farms and to encourage their preservation. Nominees must be a working farm with a minimum of 10 acres actively involved in agricultural production or generate at least $1,000 in annual income. In addition, farms must be continuously farmed for at least 100 years and owned by members of the same family for at least 100 years or be listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Crowder wants to withdraw guilty plea

Darrell Antonio Crowder pleaded guilty to the murder of his estranged wife Catcilia in December 2009 but has since made a motion to withdraw that plea, saying now that he is not guilty of the charges and that he was pressured into entering a plea by his attorney.

Crowder was charged with kicking his way into 43-year-old Catcilia's home, chasing her through the house and eventually shooting her several times following a series of angry text messages between the two on Jan. 16, 2008. Senior services board unclear about purpose

The previously defunct Newton County Senior Services Board of Directors met for the first time in nearly a year Thursday morning, and the mixture of permanent and temporary members attempted to get the board back on track.

Newly appointed, temporary members Jackie Smith - who is also the county clerk - and Tommy Hailey - who is also the recreation commission director - joined holdovers Vivian Harris, Liz Loescher and Jesse Walton on the BOD.

Benefits of burning

Mary Jane Dixon and her brother inherited hundreds of acres of forest land from their parents. Not really knowing what to do with all of the acreage, they decided to become timber farmers.

In 1987, they planted pines. Saw timber fetches the best prices, but farmers have to wait between 20 and 30 years for their trees to be prime market candidates.
