Covington student completes internship

Olivia Martzell of Covington, a Northwestern State University student studying mass communications, was nominated for two awards for a multimedia package she produced during an internship in Italy last summer. Martzell wrote, shot, edited and produced a package that was nominated for best story in the multimedia category and best overall photography, which she won.

Shop with a cop

Toy time: Covington Police Department Lt. Al Miller takes a local child shopping as part of the Shop with a Cop program, where law enforcement officials partner with the Department of Family and Children's Services to provide Christmas toys for several economically disadvantaged children in Newton County. Other CPD officers and GBI Agents helped children load their carts with holiday cheer.

Class of 1974 Food Drive

In times of need: Pictured are NCHS Class of 1974 members Rhonda Mobley Lowe and Debbie Prescott Massey, along with Community Food Pantry representatives Bernice Bailey and OJ Sidwell, with a sampling of the food items the NCHS Class of 1974 donated to the food pantry in Covington during their annual holiday food drive. The Class of 1974 would like to challenge the other NCHS classes to join in the holiday spirit by having their own food drives for the Community Food Pantry.

Mainstream Dance visits Porterdale Elementary

Keep the beat: Dancers from Mainstream Dance visited Porterdale Elementary Thursday afternoon. The dances demonstrated for the students included samples from The Nutcracker Ballet, a solo and a jazz routine. Students also got a chance to learn a few ballet terms and positions. Hometown holiday cocoa

Braving the cold: Sarai Baker enjoyed a steaming cup of hot cocoa and marshmallows in the festive Covington News store on the square Thursday evening. The Hometown Holiday Celebration, a Mainstreet Covington event to promote holiday shopping and festivities on the square, happens every Thursday evening and includes caroling, horse and carriage rides and extended shopping hours.
