Trooper English promoted to Sgt 1st

MONROE - On Aug. 1, 2014, Tracy H. English, a lifelong resident of Greene County was promoted to Sergeant First Class and appointed as Post Commander of Post 46 in Monroe. Local students, teachers rescue abandoned dogs

GWA Marching Band wins championship

This past weekend, George Walton Academy's Marching Bulldog Band won first place in the 6 Open Division at the United States Scholastic Band Association Championship held in Chattanooga, Tenn. and finished 1st out of 25 bands from around the Southeast to become the overall Southern States Champion. George Walton Academy is the first private school to win the championship.

Puppet power

The Covington Elks and Elkadettes applied to Snapping Shoals REA for a grant for $5000 three years ago. Using the funds, they prepared a puppet show for elementary school age children on drug awareness. The first school that saw the productions was East Newton Elementary in the Spring of 2007.

This year they will touch the lives of over 6000 elementary children in grades kindergarden through second with their drug awareness puppet show. At the end of the show the kids may ask the puppets a few questions.

Making miracles

The Covington Popeye's and 755 Restaurant Corporation recently made a donation of a Hank Aaron-autographed baseball and bat to The Miracle League of Newton County. Receiving the donations were Tamara Richardson, consultant to the Miracle League, Diana and Amelia Joseph, and Susan Eppley, marketing representative with Popeye's. The Miracle League Field will be built at City Pond Park and will serve mentally and physically challenged children because "every child deserves the chance to play baseball." The donated bat and ball will be used by The Miracle League of Newton County at a future event as a silent auction ...
