Conyers St train tracks to be removed

The Council also unanimously approved the closing of a section of Conyers Street, while city crews remove existing train tracks and resurface the road. The work is expected to take three or four days and begin approximately Nov. 17. Deputy City Manager Billy Bouchillon said a detour for Elizabeth and Mill Streets would temporarily divert traffic.

BOC lifts hiring freeze for public defenders office

When Newton County adopted its budget of $47.71 million in July, an agreed upon six-month hiring freeze was included. For the first time since then, the Board of Commissioners has agreed to lift the freeze for one position due to special circumstances.

Giving back to troops

At the time, Julie Pearson just wanted to do something for her fiancé, who was beginning his second tour of Iraq. With her mother, Virginia, she put together 32 Christmas stockings stuffed with 420 pounds of snacks, toiletries and other items and sent them to her fiancé to share with his unit.

Kurtz named chief assistant D.A.

Anne Kurtz has been named the chief assistant district attorney for the Alcovy Judicial Circuit, according to District Attorney Layla Zon.

Kurtz has been with the district attorney's office in Newton County since 2007. She earned a bachelor's degree in business management in 2004 from Georgia Tech and earned a law degree in 2007 from Georgia State College of Law. Kurtz worked for the Cobb County District Attorney's office during the summer of her second year of law school.
