Covington resident Yisrael finalist for 2012 National Online Teach of the Year award

Asherrie Yisrael, a Covington resident, was recently named one of three finalists for the 2012 National Online Teacher of the Year award for K-12 education.

Yisrael has taught physics, forensic science and physical sciences to grades nine through 12 at the Georgia Virtual School since 2008. She was named the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year at the Georgia Virtual School where she currently serves as the Science Department Chair. In addition to teaching, she supervises and provides feedback to teachers as chair.

Trees for Troops to be recognized at White House

Trees for Troops, a national program supported locally by Berry's Christmas Tree Farm in Covington, is being honored at the White House April 11 as a finalist in the Joining Forces Community Challenge.

This past holiday season, Berry's donated real Christmas trees as part of the nationwide program.

The council approved a request by the Public Works department to surplus some of its vehicles. According to the request, the vehicles were in "need of major repairs and the cost to repair exceed[ed] their value."

The council approved a motion to declare the week of April 8 - April 14 National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.

Miracle League Field moves forward

The Newton County Board of Commissioners approved an agreement between the county and the Newton County Recreation Commission to build the Miracle League Field using SPLOST funds. The Miracle League Field will be a specialized baseball field with related facilities aimed for disabled children to use.

Phyllis Ann Tanner

Phyllis (Flip) Ann Tanner, 64, of Covington, died April 3. The daughter of Virginia Ann Smith and the late Robert Thomas Smith, she was born in Decatur at Emory Hospital.

She was married to the love of her life, Robert 'Wayne' Tanner for 47 years. Mrs. Tanner was a graduate of Avondale High School and had a successful career as a Real Estate agent for many years. She had a great love of antiques and an even greater love of animals.

Humming bird plant this Saturday

The Georgia Hummer Study Group will hold its annual hummingbird plant sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Sunflower Farm, 1380 Durden Road, Rutledge.

Unusual plants that attract hummingbirds will be on sale as well as other perennials and annuals. Some vines, shrubs and even fruit trees ready for planting will be on sale. A large selection of seeds from the Sunflower Farm gardens will also be available.

Two residents to perform in China, North Korea

Two residents will be traveling to China and North Korea in April to perform in a 150 member all-male chorus and orchestra.

Thom Barker, of Mansfield Baptist Church, and Wayne Rikard, of Zion Baptist Church, will be performing with the chorus and orchestra, named Sons of Jubal, at the Spring Arts Festival in North Korea.
