Born in the old Porterdale Hospital, Doug Garner and his family moved to Conyers before settling into Covington. He attended Newton County High School before working at the Bibb Plant in Porterdale, but instead of waiting for the inevitable draft notice, Garner chose to enlist in the U.S. Army. The year was 1966. Garner was 18.

The Rockdale News hits the stands

Charles Hill Morris Jr., the publisher of 144-year-old Covington News, recently announced the creation of a new publication for Conyers and Rockdale County. The new weekly newspaper will be called The Rockdale News and will feature local news and sports coverage of Rockdale County. The first edition was published Saturday, April 4.

James Almand Private First Class James Dylan Almand, 22, of Covington, graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island on March 27. PFC Almand successfully completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD Parris Island as one of 72 recruits in Training Platoon 1016. Hospital Spring Gala on April 25

Newton Medical Center will hold it's Annual Spring Gala on April 25. Hosted by Linda and Reginald McFarland of Social Circle, the event promises to be an elegant and entertaining night to remember. The Gala is the Hospital Auxiliary's signature fund-raising event of the year, raising thousands of dollars over the years for the purchase of medical equipment. This year, the Auxiliary will raise money for the new neonatal intensive care unit. Tickets are $90 per person.

Festival and Ride for Child Abuse Prevention

Roughly 50 people participated in the ride from the old Wal-Mart to The Church at Covington Saturday morning to raise awareness and funds for preventing child abuse. Attendees also enjoyed live music, free popcorn and cotton candy and the beautiful spring weather.

Journey to the moon

Man in the moon: Oxford astronomy professor Jim Honeycutt visited the AP physics class at Newton High School Tuesday with microscopic samples of lunar rock and soil. He gave a short presentation about lunar features as well as basic information about meteors, asteroids and comets. The International Astronomical Union has declared 2009 the International Year of Astronomy.
