Born in the old Porterdale Hospital, Doug Garner and his family moved to Conyers before settling into Covington. He attended Newton County High School before working at the Bibb Plant in Porterdale, but instead of waiting for the inevitable draft notice, Garner chose to enlist in the U.S. Army. The year was 1966. Garner was 18.

Thornton found to be guilty on all charges

Courtney Courtmentez Thornton sat silently, his head down, as Judge Eugene Benton read the charges against him. After nearly five hours of deliberation that stretched into two days, the jury reached a verdict of guilty on each charge. Thornton shook his head slightly after each utterance of the word "guilty." Thornton, who turns 27 today, was sentenced to life in prison plus 40 years.

Supreme Court reinstates Terrell death sentence

ATLANTA (AP) - The Georgia Supreme Court has reinstated a death sentence given to Brian Keith Terrell, convicted of killing a 70-year-old Newton County man in 1992. The court's ruling Monday was unanimous. It reversed a lower-court judge's ruling that Terrell's death sentence should be set aside because his lawyers provided ineffective assistance of counsel.
