The Y prepares for Cheerios Challenge

This is just a friendly reminder about this Saturday's Cheerios Challenge to make sure everyone's ready for the big races. First of all, registration is ongoing and will be open through the morning of the race. Fireplace receives donation

Hearth and home: Covington Fire Department Capt. Tony Smith received a $1,000 donation from a local business Thursday for the CFD's Fireplace, a community-based fire safety house. Smith said he has collected approximately $60,000 in donations and in-kind services from local businesses and residents for the house but still needs around $5,000 to make the house operational. County announces CRCT results

Test results for the county's Criterion Referenced Competency Test have been released by the Georgia Department of Education and the Newton County School System has seen increases in the majority of subjects in which they are tested.

County gets $1.75 million for transportation

Newton County has still not received any stimulus road funding from the Georgia Department of Transportation, but it will receive $1.75 million in stimulus transportation money from the Atlanta Regional Commission. County Engineer Kevin Walter said he didn't know how the county would spend the money, but he said the money from ARC can be used more flexibly than money that comes from GDOT, because the GDOT project approval process is more strict.
