County OKs Baxter loan

The Newton County Board of Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday approved a resolution and intergovernmental agreement for a $5.9 million GEFA loan that will help to fund a wastewater pretreatment facility for Baxter International.

CPD earns eighth accreditation award

The Covington Police Department has earned its eighth accreditation award from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. The award was presented at the recent conference held in Jacksonville, Fla. The program has 480 standards and the department is required to meet all applicable standards. The department was the first agency in Georgia to be accredited in 1985 and the 10th in the nation. Of the original 10 agencies, only four have remained accredited.

911 Center receives third accreditation

The Covington-Newton County 911 Center has received its third accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

The Covington-Newton County 911 Communications Center attended the CALEA Conference in Jacksonville, Fla., in November, where they received their Gold Standards accreditation, according to a release from the communications center.

Pine Shadow home ransacked

A deputy responded to a call at a home on Pine Shadow Circle on Wednesday at 11:47 a.m. after a man reported that he saw three black males in a Gold Toyota Camry in his cousin's driveway. The man said the first time he passed by the home, the garage door of the house was closed.

Joy in the midst of tragedy

Editor's note: Few stories we've heard are as tragic as the one that saw a wife lose her husband on a wedding anniversary and two sons lose their father on a trip to see Santa. Our reporter Amber Pittman was moved to organize a special Christmas gift for the grieving Evans family. She contacted and coordinated with the Covington Police Department and the local Covington Santa to surprise the family with gifts and some Christmas joy in the midst of a tragedy.
