Crowell Road open
Crowell Road opened at 3 p.m. today to the delight of many home and business owners in the area. The road was closed, between I-20 and Brown Bridge Road, on Sept. 23, because of the flooding that hit several parts of Newton County. The bridge on Crowell Road that was damaged will still need future repairs, but it will remain open temporarily until those repairs are financed.

East Metro receives H1N1 injectable vaccine
The first shipment of H1N1 Injectable vaccine has arrived at the East Metro Health District serving Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale Counties. 15,200 doses of vaccine arrived at the district office late Friday. The vaccine is being disseminated within the five health department clinics, first responders, major clinics, and some doctor's offices. Health Department clinics in Covington will begin providing the H1N1 injectable vaccine today, Nov. 2.

SCLC reforming in Newton County
The Covington civil rights movement reached its peak in 1970 with the Black Easter march and the arrest of the Newton Six. And although discrimination is not as blatant and rampant today, many of the same local leaders who participated in those events feel Newton County still has a long way to go.

Fall Fun: Three Pre-K classes at Live Oak Elementary School participated in a fun pumpkin party Thursday morning. Around 60 students, teachers, and parents took part in Halloween activities, including pumpkin and cookie decorating, a ring the pumpkin game, a bean bag toss game and facepainting.
