County approves several board appointments

Though the meeting became controversial as the board had a split decision on who should be appointed as the citizen representative to the Joint Development Authority, the board unanimously approved several other appointments to a number of boards that would represent the county.

New NHS on schedule

The replacement school for Newton High is beginning to resemble the finished product. While it might be several more months before students enter those hallowed halls, work on the school is right on schedule.

The 117.7 acres on Crowell Road north is a few miles from the current NHS. Construction began in spring 2011 and the school is scheduled to open officially at the start of the 2013-14 school year. Clark Street crash kills one

A Covington man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a wreck that blocked traffic on Clark and West streets around 4:20 p.m.

Johnnie Delmar, 44, was killed after being knocked off his motorcycle. According to a press release from Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, Delmar was driving a 1998 Kawasaki ZXE motorcycle northbound on West Street heading toward Clark Street. Staff supports local for superintendent

A group of Newton County parents, teachers and residents converged on the monthly work session of the board of education Tuesday in order to offer their support, and a list of signatures, to the board in favor of promoting Samantha Fuhrey, current deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction, to the position of superintendent.

Lynn House, an instructional coach with the Newton County School System (NCSS), addressed the board with a prepared letter and a list of signatures, many of them from NCSS employees.
