Two cities unite to preserve their past

This week, I spent a good bit of time wading through a ton of material to learn about historic preservation. This was after learning that Social Circle has received its designation as a Certified Local Government. The CLG Program is a federal-state-local program to promote historic preservation at the local level. The Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources assists local governments in applying for a CLG designation, which also requires approval by the National Park Service.

Oxford Language Hall reopens

An original 19th century building in Oxford has had a full restoration fit with 21st century technology. Reopening for spring semester 2013, Oxford College's Language Hall is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the county, built in 1874 by craftsmen believed to have been from Covington and Newton County.

Nonprofit seeks volunteer of the year

The Newton Fund is looking for an outstanding volunteer for its fifth annual Pat Patrick Big Heart Award. Local nonprofits, individuals and other groups are asked to nominate individuals who have made a measurable difference in Newton County through selfless endeavors. Along with recognition, the award winner will receive a $2,000 award grant to be designated to a charity of choice. The award, named in honor of the founding chair of the Newton Fund, will be presented at a special reception in late February.
