Social Circle home moving to new location

It took about five years to get funds and to complete the process to move the 186-year-old home, said Mike Owens, owner of Magnolia Manor, the new location of the home. The Historic Preservation Society of Social Circle (HPSSC) had pledged $10,000 for anyone who promised to move and restore the home, which was a significant chunk of the fundraising efforts needed to make the move official. Straight shootin’

The inaugural Eagles Droppin' Arrows 3-D Archery Fun Shoot, hosted by the Eastside High School FFA, was held Saturday morning at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division Saturday morning. Archers fired at 3-D targets of mountain goats and deer, and some rogue shots ended up in trees. The event raised funds for the Eastside High School FFA to use to travel to the Indianapolis FFA convention in October.

Newton County misses state planning deadline

For the second time in 2010, Newton County has missed a deadline to turn in required planning documents to the state and will be ineligible to receive some new state funding during July and most of August.

Newton County was late turning in its Capital Improvement Elements plan to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs; the plan spells out which projects the county will build with its collected impact fees, when they will be built and how much they will cost.

Race for statewide utility regulatory commission under radar

Although the Georgia Public Service Commission gets little fanfare, the outcome of the 2010 race for one of its open seats could affect local residents more than any other statewide race.
The PSC regulates services provided by telecommunications, electric and natural gas companies, as well as the rates they charge to customers. Jam-packed: jail overcrowding worsened by guard lay offs

The Newton County Jail was built to hold 650 inmates, but with budget cuts and an increase in crime in the county, there are several inmates sleeping on cots on the floor. And according to Detention Administrator Captain Sammy Banks, the detention center is scheduled to take a hit with significant cuts to its staff this week.

Newborn to host bad weather preparedness presentation

BOC clarifies senior services; could be restructured

The BOC held a senior services work session Tuesday night, and once again decided that the current structure of the organization's board of directors was not working. Two key shortcomings cited by officials were a lack of participation and the inability or unwillingness to do fundraising.

BOC officially approves 10.91 rollup rate

On Tuesday, the Newton County Board of Commissioners officially approved a 10.91 millage rate for FY2011, three weeks after approving the $46.3 million budget that depended on increased property revenues from that rollup millage rate.

The millage rate approval had to be delayed in order to give the county time to properly advertise the revised 10.91 rate as required by law; previously the 9.73 rate had been the only rate publicly advertised.
