Christmas comes to town

Santa came to town this weekend, as Christmas activities dotted the Newton County calendar. Friday, along with the Grinch visiting the Covington Square and Santa Claus visiting The Covington News, Porterdale held its annual Christmas Parade. The Porterdale Police department and its K-9 unit led the way, and the Newton High School Sound Factory band heralded Santa Claus pulled in his sleigh by two live reindeer. Purple Heart for ‘Mama Bear’

Maj. Patty Justice was awarded a Purple Heart at a ceremony held on Friday, Dec. 5, at the Walk of Heroes Veterans memorial at Black Shoals park in Rockdale. She was wounded on Aug. 7, 2012 by an improvised explosive device while she was serving as a surgical nurse at Forward Operating Base Shank in Afghanistan.
