Zoning administrator resigns

Branin Burdette will no longer be Newton County's zoning administrator. Board of Commissioner Chairman Kathy Morgan made the announcement at their meeting on Tuesday night as she thanked Burdette for his services to the county saying he has done an excellent job.

Burdette's last day with the county will be on Aug. 29. He said he will move back to his hometown of Seattle, Wash. to take a new position as a zoning inspector.

Newton County Reads names new chair

Newton County Reads, a nonprofit, community service organization, has taught adults in Newton County to read since 2000. Their free classes in basic reading skills and GED preparation are conducted through small group instruction and one-on-one tutoring at six locations throughout the county, providing program access to Newton County residents in their own neighborhoods.

More students take ACT, score rise

A record high number of Newton County School System students took the ACT college entrance exam in 2012 and in the process, increased scores in three content areas (English, reading and science) and the composite score. The district also matched scores from the previous year on the math portion of the test. Although NCSS students increased or maintained in each category, the district's overall scores are still below state and national averages.

CINCINNATI (AP) - Neil Armstrong was a quiet, self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step onto the moon. The modest man, who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter-million miles away, died Saturday. He was 82.

Stolen vehicle found engulfed in fire

Covington police, deputies with the Newton County Sheriff's Office and the fire department responded to the intersection of Henderson Mill Road and Lackey Road on Thursday at 11:50 p.m. in reference to a vehicle being on fire. According to a report from the NCSO, officials found a burgundy 2000 Nissan Maxima on fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire from the car and then deputies looked up the tag number on the vehicle and located the owner.
