Piedmont Cattlemen holds awards banquet

The Piedmont Cattlemen's Association recently held their 2011awards banquet at the FFA-FCCLA Center in Newton County with approximately 120 members in attendance.

City could privatize trash pickup

Oxford is looking to privatize its trash and recycling pick up services because the city loses around $81,000 annually by providing the service and its remaining full-time solid waste employee will be retiring this year.

The Oxford City Council will host a work session to discuss privatization at 6 p.m. April 16 at Oxford City Hall.

Local banks sponsor peanut butter, jelly drive

The Bank of North Georgia along with the Bank of Coweta will host the 5th annual 'Spread the Love' Peanut Butter and Jelly Food Drive April 2 through April 30.

The drive will benefit 37 local food pantries. Since 2008, the food drive has collected more than 10 tons of peanut butter and jelly.

Council defines indecent exposure in new law

The Porterdale City Council approved a new law covering indecent exposure despite concerns over wording in the ordinance and one councilman's opinion that a prohibition on saggy pants should have been included.

The vote was 5 to 2 in favor during the ordinance's third and final reading at the council's Tuesday meeting. The new law defines expose of one's buttocks, genital areas or undergarments in public as "lewd and indecent." The definition extends to simulated sexual acts, such as impropriate touching, and urinating in public.

City approves new airport terminal design

Construction on a $1.53 million terminal building at the Covington Municipal Airport could start this summer after the Covington City Council approved a final design Monday.

The 5,500 square foot design was created by the LPA Group, based on the recommendations of a committee of local community and aviation officials. The building is smaller than initially planned and will not contain a restaurant after committee members decided it wasn't necessary or practical.

Four arrested in Monroe armed robbery

MONROE - Four men were arrested last week following an incident Monday morning near a Home Depot in Monroe, including the victim, according to The Walton Tribune.

The alleged victim, Matthew Holmes, 29, was arrested for shooting at robbers, The Tribune reports.

Family of fatally shot Atlanta teen seek arrest

ATLANTA (AP) - The family of a 17-year-old fatally shot at an Atlanta apartment complex - trying to draw a parallel to the Trayvon Martin case in Florida - called Tuesday for the arrest of a security guard who killed their son. The guard and authorities say the shooting was justified.

Canard Arnold was shot in the back on Dec. 31. Christopher Chestnut, an attorney for Arnold's parents, said the case is similar to the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Martin in a town house community in Sanford, Fla., by George Zimmerman, the complex's neighborhood watch volunteer. Home Depot closing Ga plant that employs 300

ATHENS (AP) - Home Depot is closing its Georgia distribution plant that employs 300 workers near Athens.

The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer said Friday it's closing the four-year-old Braselton plant by the end of this year. Company Spokesman Steve Holmes says that's because the plant isn't as modern as the company's 18 other distribution centers that it uses to move merchandise to its retail stores.

Rockdale mourns loss of two educators

CONYERS - Last month, Rockdale County mourned the premature loss of two bright lights in education, Lee Gilbert Turner and Laura Barnes.

After a long up and down battle, retired Pine Street and Eastminster School music teacher Lee Turner, 63, passed away from breast cancer. A week later, RCPS Social Worker Laura Barnes, 53, died from sudden heart complications.
