A hero’s last march

Joseph Griffin, 49, the Mansfield man killed Christmas Eve in Afghanistan, was honored with a hero's escort Monday afternoon, when members of the Newton County Sheriff's Office, the Patriot Guard, Henry County Sheriff's Office, Covington Fire Departmant, Newton County Fire Service and others escorted his body from Atlanta to Covington.

Griffin once worked as a deputy with the Newton County Sheriff's Office, first from 1996 until 2000 and again in 2007. He was in Afghanistan as a military veteran advising the Afghan National Police when he was murdered by a policewoman.

Schulz named Chairman

Newton County Commissioner Nancy Schulz recently was named as the 2012-2013 Chairman of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) Health and Human Services Committee. The appointment was made by ACCG President and Taylor County Commissioner Clinton Perry. Schulz previously served as the vice chairman.

Man exposes himself in Kroger parking lot

A woman waiting with children in the Kroger parking lot started her New Year off by calling the police on a man who reportedly exposed himself to her.

The victim was waiting in a car parked outside the grocery store with three children between the ages of 3 and 5 while her sister shopped inside. She told police that she noticed a truck parked in front of her when the driver backed out. Instead of leaving the parking lot, the driver reportedly drove around, parked beside her and opened his door.
