Three charged in UGA locker room theft

ATHENS, Ga. - Authorities in Athens say two football players from Carver High School in Columbus and an unidentified juvenile have been charged in connection with thefts from the University of Georgia football locker room.

The Magistrate's Court in Athens said 18-year-old Deion Bonner and 17-year-old Marquise T. Hawkins were charged Monday with theft by taking. Authorities identified the third person arrested only as being younger than 17.

The Cheerios Challenge

Ready, set, run: Hundreds of runners of all ages took part Saturday in the 10th annual Cheerios Challenge in Covington. The event featured 10-K and 5-K races and a 1-mile fun run. There were record-breaking winners in the 5-K race: Janet Cherobon-Bangom, 32, who came in at 17:15, and the male overall winner, 27-year-old Robert Letting, who came in at 14:48. Both are from Rome.

A taste of downtown

Tastes and treasures: The Spring Fling was held Thursday evening at Southern Heartland Gallery, 1132 Monticello St., while A Taste of Downtown, a showcase of fare from seven downtown restaurants, was offered next door at 1138 Monticello Street Banquet Hall. The art gallery event featured an exhibit of wearable art, in conjunction with partners Brendle's, Perfect Fit Lingerie, Merle Norman and New Shoez. A wine tasting, staged by Newton Package, was offered, and entertainment was provided by Marshall McCart.

Explorer’s complete training

Objectives complete: The Newton County Sheriff's Office Explorers recently received the 2010 National Explorers Excellence Award, after meeting all 11 program objectives, including community oriented activities, fingerprinting, vehicle pull-overs and handcuffing techniques. The group only needed to meet eight objectives but met all 11, after having only been started in February 2010. The group is headed by Investigator Mark Joiner. Sheriff Ezell Brown extended a special thanks to the citizens of Newton County for donations to the program, which went toward their uniforms, and to General Mills for a $2,000 donation for equipment for the program.
