The Newton County School System Work-Based Learning (WBL) programs at Alcovy, Eastside, and Newton high schools, and Newton College and Career Academy named Piedmont Newton its WBL Employer of the Year for 2016 Tuesday.

In 2007, with the support from the community and a 100-acre land donation from a local philanthropic fund, an exemplary attribute to Newton County was created in the emergence of Georgia Perimeter College. The college allows students from the surrounding counties to obtain a two-year degree and achieve countless opportunities. The Newton campus is a place for dual enrollment students, transfer and first-time freshman students to earn their associate degree.

Many people are like me in one respect -- they enjoy tilling garden soil and planting vegetables just to see things grow. Fresh tasting vegetables are an added benefit. My favorite vegetables to eat are fresh okra, peas and sweet corn, but I enjoy growing tomatoes the most. Tomatoes just seem to be more of a challenge for me.
Over 500 athletes will gather Monday, May 2 through Friday, May 6 at the Newton County Special Olympics games at Sharp Stadium field. The week opens with a parade line-up at 9:30 a.m. at Sharp Learning Center, with opening ceremonies to follow at 11:30 a.m. in the stadium.
