GPTC honors student, faculty member

Robert Knox, a CIS computer support specialist student attending Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) has been selected as the college's 2014 GOAL Award winner. The Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) is a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) that honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state's technical college students. GOAL winners are selected at each of the state's 24 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regent college with a technical education division.

Thursday morning crash with hazardous materials shuts down I-20

All lanes on Interstate 20 east were blocked on both sides near exit 101 just after 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning when a double tractor trailer carrying hazardous materials overturned in the median at the Social Circle Road overpass. The truck was carrying a myriad of items, including a small amount of sodium chloride, and Walton County Fire Department's Hazardous Material Team were able to secure the load.

NEGRC Summer Youth Work Experience

 The Northeast Georgia Regional Commission (NEGRC) is providing a 2010 Summer Youth Work Experience for eligible youth in the 12 county Northeast Georgia area. Efforts are underway to secure federal funding to provide these services for 300 to 1,300 youth for the months of June and July. Calls to be put on the work experience waiting list began April 1 and will continue until all available appointment slots are filled. Youth must be between 14 to 24 years of age. Revised trade adjustment assistance for farmers program announced

Hobby Stripling, State Executive Director of USDA's Farm Service Agency in Georgia, announced that USDA has a revised Trade Adjustment Assistance for Farmers (TAAF) Program. Under the program, the USDA provides technical assistance and cash benefits to eligible producers of raw agricultural commodities and fishermen who have been hurt by import competition.

Cancer patients, survivors walk for cure at Relay

Air Force Capt. Scott Byrum returned home from the Middle East last November. Steve and Becky Byrum were thrilled that their son had come back unscathed from this third tour of duty. But as too often happens, an insidious disease reared its ugly head and turned joy into devastation - Becky was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Parks Grove reunion

Gathering of friends: Alumni of Parks Grove School gathered at Burge Plantation on April 17 for a reunion and celebration organized by Joyce Perry Traylor. Parks Grove School stood near the corner of Jeff Cook Road and Morehouse Road in eastern Newton County from about 1912 until 1947. It was established and built by Ida Gray Morehouse and her husband Merritt Morehouse, grandparents of the current owner of Burge, to provide schooling for black children at a time when public education was difficult or non-existent for them.
