Nutcracker auditions Sept. 8

Although outside doesn't feel like Christmas just yet, the Arts Association of Newton County is getting into the holiday spirit early by announcing public auditions for its annual Nutcracker ballet.

The group is asking all curious residents to give the ballet slipper a try and come to Mainstream Dance in Covington Saturday, Sept. 8. Auditions for children ages five and six are from noon to 12:30 p.m., ages seven and up, auditions are from 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Woman arrested after attacking sister

Covington police responded to a call about a family fight at a home on Hillside Drive just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday. When police arrived, they spoke to a woman who said her oldest daughter had jumped on her youngest daughter.

Police spoke with the youngest daughter who said her older sister Mallery Smith was mad at her because she thought she had been seeing her boyfriend.

Introducing the new area code

The newest set of phone numbers about to crop up using the new metro Atlanta 470 area code will seem strange at first, but for residents in the greater Atlanta area setting up a brand new phone number, they will only have to accept that as the other area codes, 770, 678, and 404 are no longer available.

While the area code 470 first appeared to me on a personal level this weekend, 470 is actually not so new, having been first activated in 2010.

It is a great idea to belong to your local historical society. The society may have information on where and how your relatives lived. Local Historical and Genealogical societies sometimes sponsor genealogy classes. They may also need volunteers which, of course, is a valuable experience when researching your ancestors.
