Mansfield resident to perform at Young Harris College

Young Harris College student Sam Wolaver, a junior music education major from Mansfield, will perform at the Young Harris College Jazz Band concert on Monday, April 16. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium of the Clegg Fine Arts Building on the Young Harris College campus. Wolaver is a graduate of Eastside High School.

The Young Harris College Jazz Band will perform a variety of music covering all styles of the jazz genre. Directed by Adjunct Instructor of Music Mike Campbell, D.A., the ensemble guarantees an evening of entertaining instrumental music featuring several student solos.

Daycare employee arrested for DUI

A 22-year-old daycare employee was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with DUI after deputies found she'd crashed into a ditch on Salem Road near Smith Store.

When deputies from the Newton County Sheriff's Office arrived they reportedly saw Allysa Marie Johnson outside of her vehicle attempted to push it out of a ditch. When they asked Johnson what happened, she told them she was heading home and had misjudged where her turn was and ended up in the ditch.

Covington resident Yisrael finalist for 2012 National Online Teach of the Year award

Asherrie Yisrael, a Covington resident, was recently named one of three finalists for the 2012 National Online Teacher of the Year award for K-12 education.

Yisrael has taught physics, forensic science and physical sciences to grades nine through 12 at the Georgia Virtual School since 2008. She was named the 2010-2011 Teacher of the Year at the Georgia Virtual School where she currently serves as the Science Department Chair. In addition to teaching, she supervises and provides feedback to teachers as chair.

Trees for Troops to be recognized at White House

Trees for Troops, a national program supported locally by Berry's Christmas Tree Farm in Covington, is being honored at the White House April 11 as a finalist in the Joining Forces Community Challenge.

This past holiday season, Berry's donated real Christmas trees as part of the nationwide program.

The council approved a request by the Public Works department to surplus some of its vehicles. According to the request, the vehicles were in "need of major repairs and the cost to repair exceed[ed] their value."

The council approved a motion to declare the week of April 8 - April 14 National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.

Walker's Bend center moves forward
