Covington Fire Department to host ‘Fire House 5’ race

Covington Fire Department officials are organizing an inaugural "Fire House 5" 5K Run and a 1-mile fun run to benefit the Covington Fireman's Memorial Scholarship, which provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the Newton County School system, to be held on May 22. The road race will run the same course as the popular Covington Fuzz Run.

NHS student reports rape

Authorities at the Newton County Sheriff's Office are investigating an alleged rape that occurred on school grounds March 17.

According to NCSO 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, they were notified by the parents of the girl, who is "early high school age" on March 31, when the parents of the girl reported the sexual assault to school resource officers.

Census workers visiting homes in person

Hundreds of U.S. Census workers will be canvassing Newton County neighborhoods until the end of July, in an effort to reach any local address that did not return a 2010 Census form.

Local Census official Gloria Solomon said with the recent employee additions, approximately 400 census workers have been hired to work in Newton County for the Census, creating a temporary influx of much-needed income to local residents.
