Benton House crowns new queen

Benton House of Covington assisted living has a special community tradition that gives senior residents the opportunity to sparkle, smile and shine in the spotlight. Saturday, May 19 marked the third annual Ms. Benton House pageant at the assisted living community that is home to around sixty seniors in Covington. Director of Activities Betty Britt coordinated this event. Britt said seven lovely seniors all over the age of seventy-five answered questions from three local judges on topics like the best advice for young mothers and the contestants modeled sparkly gowns. The 2012 Contestants include residents:

The Arts Association-Newton County presented Covington Regional Ballet's "Alice in Wonderland" at the Olive Swann Porter Hall Auditorium the first weekend in May. The dancers converged on stage from Mainstream Dance and the Gwinnett Ballet Theatre thus creating the Covington Regional Ballet.

Waffle House standoff backs up I-20

A standoff at the Waffle House on Evan's Mill Road in Lithonia had Interstate 20 backed up and area streets closed Tuesday around 3 p.m. Out of at least two suspects holed up in the Waffle House, one was apprehended and one fled to a nearby parking lot where he held a gun to his head, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

Man’s best friend saves lives

A parade of motorcycles rolled down the streets of Porterdale with flags attached to the back waving, bearing the names of police dogs that fell in the line of duty this past year.

The fourth annual K-9 Memorial Police Benefit Motorcycle Ride raised money through an auction for the purchase of safety equipment for K-9 police teams in Georgia. The fundraiser auctioned off police and dog related items like a gun cleaning kit, dog leashes and dog treats.
