Newton girl to compete in national pageant

Eight-year-old Kaitlyn Cole, of Newton County is a third grader at Oak Hill Elementary and she recently competed in the East Coast Beauty Pageant held in Raleigh, N.C. where she won the grand prize.

Kaitlyn will now represent North Carolina at Nationals against contestants representing every other state in Orlando, Fla. over Thanksgiving.

Man found bleeding in Porterdale

Porterdale police found a wounded man laying in the street on Monday. Police said an unidentified white male who had a gunshot or knife wound to the arm was on the ground near Main Street and City Hall. Officers searched the victim for other wounds and called EMS to the scene. Deputies from the Newton County Sheriff's Office were called to the scene. A deputy followed a trail of blood from the victim, which led to the direction of Willow Street. The victim was taken to Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

City plans to increase spending by 1.7M

The city of Covington plans to increase spending by $1.7 million this fiscal year as it plans to tackle some large projects, including work on a new airport terminal, a natural gas fueling facility, improving lighting on the square and the completion of the trail from Eastside High School to the Covington Branch Library.

Local helps fight deadly disease

Covington resident Shelley Campbell has traveled all over the world studying deadly diseases from the caves of Uganda to the town of Pune, India to the diverse country of South Africa.

For her most recent work on a vaccine for Rift Valley Fever, a potentially lethal mosquito-borne disease that affects animals and humans, Campbell won the Charles C. Shepard Science Award for Laboratory Science.

Average retail gasoline prices in Atlanta have risen 10.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.42/gal yesterday. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.49/gal, according to gasoline price website AtlantaGasPrices.com.
