County budget won’t need tax hike

Four county commissioners informally agreed at Monday night's work session to support a $44.89 million budget that will restore five paid working days to employees, but will not give the chamber of commerce any additional funding for economic development.

Commissioners Mort Ewing, Tim Fleming, Nancy Schulz and Lanier Sims said Monday they were comfortable with the proposed budget as created by County Manager John Middleton, Finance Director Michelle Kelly and staff. Commissioner J.C. Henderson did not attend the budget work session.

Cousins had lockdown due to suicide threat

Cousins Middle School was on lockdown Monday for several hours, after calls came in to 911 about a man threatening suicide in the woods behind the school.

According to Newton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison, the man called 911 around 2:30 p.m. He gave a name but officials were - and are - unsure if it was a nickname. He also called from an untraceable cell phone. Morrison said he called several times, reiterating that he planned to kill himself.

City approves water rate increase

The Covington city council voted 4-2 to increase the water rate by 30 cents for every 1,000 gallons used over the 3,000 minimum, with councilman Chris Smith and councilwoman Hawnethia Williams opposing.

The increase is based on usage and comes as a result of the county raising the wholesale price of water.
