Helping the CPD

The Police Who Care: Dr. Doug Gilreath of Covington First United Methodist Church presented Covington Police Chief Stacey Cotton with a check for $750 for the "Police Who Care Fund." The money was collected during the Fuzz Run Weekend at the spaghetti lunch and dinner held at the church. The meal was free but donations were accepted.

Live nativity

The coming of Christ: Covington First United Methodist Church will present a Live Nativity from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday on the front lawn of the church, 1113 Conyers St. Nativity and Christmas music will be played at the event. The Live Nativity is partnering with activities on the Downtown Square to open the holiday season with the Lighting of the Historic Courthouse and Candlelight Shopping.

The queen of clean

A sweet sendoff: Many of the county's most prominent faces, and cute ones, showed up to give Connie Waller a proper send off Friday at the Newton County Administration Building. Waller worked at the county for 28 years promoting recycling and litter reduction; she helped form Keep Covington/Newton Beautiful and served as its executive director for many years. Waller retired after suffering a stress-related heart attack and is looking forward to taking life easy for a while.
