Newborn to host annual festival

Newborn is hosting its annual Horneyhead Festival from at 8 a.m. Saturday at the old Newborn Schoolhouse at 4326 Ga. Highway 142.

The event will feature a fishing tournament beginning at 8 a.m. and the winners with the largest fish in various divisions will be featured in the Pied Piper parade starting at 2 p.m. Anyone can participate in the parade, which will go around downtown.

Heritage teacher also faces child molestation charge

The former Heritage teacher who was arrested for having sex with a student was also later charged with child molestation after investigators discovered the activity started while the student was 15.

Leslie Howard Mosley, Jr., 36, who lived in Covington, turned himself in Friday to the Rockdale County Jail where he remains without bond.

Pope takes plea in murder

The murder trial against Candice Cadasha Pope ended abruptly last Thursday when she elected to enter a guilty plea in the 2010 death of Alvin Hall.

After three days of testimony, Pope pleaded guilty to malice murder, making false statements and concealing the death of another. She received life with the possibility of parole for murder and 15 years concurrent confinement for the two lesser charges. She will become eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

Boyfriend denies hitting girlfriend’s face

Upon arriving at the scene of a report of a family fight, the officer noted that a woman and her child outside in their yard crying. The woman had a large red mark on her right check and the child was holding her right hand close to her tummy.

The woman told the officer that she and her boyfriend had been sitting on the couch talking and he slapped her for no reason.
