Chi Tau Omega awards scholarships

Chi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving high school students in Newton and Rockdale County. Our scholarships recognize outstanding high schools seniors who have been accepted to an accredited four-year college or university. The awards are given to students who have high scholastic achievement, proven leadership, and have actively participated in community service.

Since 2005, Chi Tau Omega has proudly awarded nearly $33,000 to students in an effort to promote, encourage, and prepare our next generation of leaders with higher education.

NCSS sets Technology nights

Eastside High School and Newton County Schools' Technology Department are sponsoring a "Back to School with Technology Night" tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m. Three NCSS-approved computer companies - Apple Computers, ByteSpeed Computers and Dell Computers will have numerous products on display which parents and students can touch and test.

At approximately 7 p.m., each company will make a presentation highlighting their special educational programs and discount pricing available for parents attending the event.

Chemical spill injures one at Nisshinbo

A worker at Nisshinbo, a brake manufacturer off Ga. Highway 142, suffered second degree burns Thursday afternoon, when several hundred gallons of hydrogen peroxide spilled out of a container that was being loaded onto a truck.

According to Covington Assistant Fire Marshal Tony Smith, roughly 350 gallons of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide spilled when a forklift driver lost control of his truck, dropping the container which then split. Other than the one worker who was transported to Grady Hospital "in pain, but in good spirits," no one else was injured.

Williams elected to GMA board of directors

Covington Councilwoman Hawnethia Williams was elected to the Board of Directors for the Georgia Municipal Association during the association's annual meeting in Savannah June 25.

Williams will serve as president of GMA's 5th District. The district includes cities in the following counties: Jackson, Madison, Elbert, Barrow, Clarke, Oglethorpe, Morgan, Greene, Newton, Jasper, Walton and Oconee.

Filming crews dressed Ga. Hwy 11 to resemble 1950s America for the film '42.' The movie tells the story of Jackie Robinsion, who broke the black color barrier in Major League Baseball when he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Robinson is being played by Chadwick Boseman, who has mainly had smaller roles on TV shows, while the role of the famous Dodgers manager Branch Rickey is being played by Harrison Ford. Alan Tudyk, Christopher Meloni, Lucas Black and John C. McGinley are also starring in the movie.
