Friday marked Arbor Day in Georgia and the 19th Arbor Day celebration for the city of Covington. This year's celebration was held at Turner Lake Recreation Complex.

Covington Tree Board President Loy Summers greeted guests and Covington Mayor Kim Carter related a story about realizing the aesthetic quality of trees while on business in El Paso. She said she quickly grew weary of red, dusty landscapes scantily dotted with cacti.

The parents of recently injured Deputy Wesley Atha have organized a fundraising campaign to purchase these vests for every county deputy. Their fundraising goal is $113,000. Each vest costs between $500-$700, depending on the size. Roughly 13 cars were burglarized in apartments on Gross Lake Parkway in the early hours of Monday morning and authorities are still searching for the men they believe responsible.

Ford granted stay of execution

The scheduled execution of convicted murderer Melbert Ford will not happen Feb. 23 as planned. A stay of execution has been issued for up to 90 days due to a vacancy on the Board of Pardons and Paroles. To execute when there is not a full board is a violation of law. Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue is responsible for filling the vacant spot. The Newton County Superior Court ordered the execution of Ford earlier this month.
