House weighs measures to amend U.S. Constitution

The parents of recently injured Deputy Wesley Atha have organized a fundraising campaign to purchase these vests for every county deputy. Their fundraising goal is $113,000. Each vest costs between $500-$700, depending on the size. Each Friday The Covington News will publish a list of individuals, businesses and civic groups who have donated to the cause that week as well as the total amount raised. Donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to Newton Co. Sheriff's Office and earmarked for safety vests and equipment. City of Covington utility customers can now pay their utility bills online. As part of the city's effort to introduce technology into daily operations, a bill pay Web site went live Friday.

Traffic safety a priority for holiday patrols

Traffic safety is the priority for holiday patrols over the next two weeks by Georgia State Troopers and officers with the Motor Carrier Compliance and Capitol Police Divisions of the Georgia Department of Public Safety. Both the Christmas and New Year's holiday periods are 78 hours long this year. Last year, traffic crashes claimed the lives of 46 people in Georgia during the two holiday periods.

Southern Heartland Gallery on the Square has extended the Silent Auction on its Art Guitar until Dec. 22. The guitar previews three other guitars to be auctioned at the Art Guild Fundraiser, Monte Carlo for the Arts, on Feb. 6. The guitar was painted by SHA Gallery Artist Linda Pflug.

Faithful friend

For 15 years the Newton County Animal Shelter was served by a dedicated volunteer. He passed away in September and Wednesday shelter employees and volunteers recognized his loyalty by hanging a plaque honoring him in the shelter lobby.

Crowe found guilty by judge

Christina Renee Crowe was found guilty in the death of 7-year-old Bobby Joe Couch Thursday afternoon and sentenced by Newton County Superior Court Judge Horace J. Johnson Jr. to serve at least 10 years of a 25-year prison term.

County approves spending more on Chamber
