Covington student completes internship

Olivia Martzell of Covington, a Northwestern State University student studying mass communications, was nominated for two awards for a multimedia package she produced during an internship in Italy last summer. Martzell wrote, shot, edited and produced a package that was nominated for best story in the multimedia category and best overall photography, which she won.

Bless the pets

Blessed doggy: On Saturday, Oct. 23, Dr. Doug Gilreath, Senior Pastor of Covington First United Methodist Church held the first Blessing of the Animals for the Community on the downtown square in Covington. The service followed the Annual Mutt Show sponsored by the Humane Society. Members of the community were invited to bring the dogs, cats, fish, turtles, rabbits, any of their beloved pets to be blessed. County meets to discuss agriculture protection

Georgia Farm Bureau to award agriculture scholarships

Ten scholarships valued at $14,250 are available from the Georgia Farm Bureau to Newton County high school students who plan to major in agriculture, family and consumer science or a related agricultural field.

Cracker Barrel is expected to announce plans in 2011 for a Covington restaurant, and it could be followed by a few other national chains, providing positive signs for a county seeking commercial growth in a depressed economy, as well as more consumer options.

Sex offenders to attend Halloween shut-in

For parents whose children will be going door-to-door in search of treats on Saturday, they will have one less danger to worry about. Sex offenders who are currently on parole or probation in Newton County are required to report to the sheriff's office during peak door-knocking hours.

Stepfather charged with sexually molesting, videotaping stepdaughter

A 32-year-old Newton County stepfather was arrested after his 13-year-old stepdaughter reported that he had been touching her inappropriately for two years. It was also later found that he had been videotaping her in various rooms throughout the home.

A fourth grade student was removed from class Thursday morning at Oak Hill Elementary after bringing an airsoft pellet gun and pellets to class.

Unemployment rate declines for Newton County

The unemployment rate in Newton County dropped slightly in September to 12 percent from 12.6 percent in August, according to information released today by the Georgia Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate also declined in metro Atlanta, from 10.3 percent in August to 10 percent in September. The statewide rate (seasonally adjusted) remained unchanged at 10 percent. The national unemployment rate is 9.6 percent.

Tornado watch continues for Newton County

A tornado watch has been extended to 8 p.m. for Newton County and much of north Georgia, according to the National Weather Service. Rain stretched just north of Covington, from northeast Georgia and into Alabama, according to weather service radar.
