Consignment shop reopens after 4 years

Taryn Robbins opened a consignment shop for children's clothes, toys and equipment in 1990 but had to close her doors in 2010. Now the chalkboard outside her new store says "open," and she plans to keep it that way.

Leadership Collaborative reboots effort to implement 2050 plan

A large group needs to keep lines of communication open.

So, members of Newton County's Leadership Collaborative, a group of officials from business, schools and various government entities, agreed Wednesday that they want to have more meetings as a group and to keep in closer touch through e-mail.

$160 million in SPLOST projects submitted

Newton County and its five municipalities turned in their SPLOST wish lists recently, and county commissioners are now tasked with cutting down $160 million in requests to an approximately $55 million final list. For a full list of project see the attached PDF.

The special local option sales tax is an optional 1 percent sales tax that is collected specifically to pay for capital projects, normally infrastructure and buildings. Newton County has had four SPLOTS previously, with the first one being passed by voters in 1987 to build Lake Varner.

AC Unit Thefts

Air conditioning units have been stolen recently from several homes and apartments in Newton County, according to Covington Police and Newton County Sheriff's Office reports.

On Tuesday, a California resident who owns a property on Kirkland Road told deputies that an air conditioning unit had been cut from the wall.

Crime Briefs - Two Charged

Covington police reported that a shoplifting investigation resulted in the arrest of two women for possession of suspected methamphetamine on Monday.

Police charged Michelle Payne, 39, of 6024 Clane Drive in Covington, and Stephanie Miranda, 26, of 629 Windy Hill Road in Monticello, with theft by shoplifting and possession of methamphetamine about 1:37 p.m. Monday at the CVS Pharmacy at 8183 U.S. Highway 278 N.E.
