Covington student completes internship

Olivia Martzell of Covington, a Northwestern State University student studying mass communications, was nominated for two awards for a multimedia package she produced during an internship in Italy last summer. Martzell wrote, shot, edited and produced a package that was nominated for best story in the multimedia category and best overall photography, which she won.

Winning ladies: Five Newton County girls were on cheer team that recently won second-place at a United Youth Football Conference Cheer Competition and was awarded the "Atlanta Falcon's Cheer Squad of the Week" in early November. The ladies are Mikenzie Armstead, fifth grade at Fairview Theme Elementary, N'kia Johnson, fifth grade at Ficquett Elementary, Kiara Cannon, fifth grade at Live Oak Elementary, Jamiah Giles, sixth grade at Cousins Middle School and Amayyah Smith-Browning, seventh grade at Indian Creek Middle School.

Governor's tree has Newton roots

In 1980, JoAnn Sims dug up a 1-foot pine tree from the forest and moved it to a pot. Thirty years later, the tree is nearly twice as tall as her house and will soon find itself in front of the Governor's Mansion, where it will play a part in the annual state tree lighting ceremony.
