GPTC honors student, faculty member

Robert Knox, a CIS computer support specialist student attending Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) has been selected as the college's 2014 GOAL Award winner. The Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) is a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) that honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state's technical college students. GOAL winners are selected at each of the state's 24 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regent college with a technical education division.

Sam, Louly Hay to host 2010 NMC Auxiliary Gala

The home of Sam and Louly Hay, Clark's Grove, will be the venue for the annual Newton Medical Center Auxiliary Spring Gala on April 24. The home, at 3184 Clark Street, was built in 1941 by Louly's parents, Robert and Louly Fowler.

Having the gala at this site is particularly meaningful to the Newton Medical Center Auxiliary in the 50th year since the founding of the organization, as Louly Fowler was chosen as the first Auxiliary president. Vampire Diaries 1st season to end with parade on square

Small towns love their parades, whether those towns are fictional or real. The square will be closed off nearly all day Sunday, as the Vampire-inhabited town of Mystic Falls, Va. hosts its Founder's Day Celebration, complete with an evening fireworks show.

A parade with floats and around 500 extras is expected to start around noon on either the square or Floyd Street, but won't last very long, said a Vampire Diaries crew member. Fireworks are expected to be set off between 9 p.m. and midnight.

Four arrested in two separate burglaries earlier this week

Four people have been arrested in two separate burglaries, and according to Newton County Sheriff's Office 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, citizens of the county have been instrumental in apprehending those who authorities believe responsible.
