GPTC honors student, faculty member

Robert Knox, a CIS computer support specialist student attending Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC) has been selected as the college's 2014 GOAL Award winner. The Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) is a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) that honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state's technical college students. GOAL winners are selected at each of the state's 24 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regent college with a technical education division.

Authorities at the Newton County Sheriff's Office are investigating an alleged rape that occurred on school grounds March 17.

According to NCSO 1st Lt. Mark Mitchell, they were notified by the parents of the girl, who is "early high school age" on March 31, when the parents of the girl reported the sexual assault to school resource officers.

Census workers visiting homes in person

Hundreds of U.S. Census workers will be canvassing Newton County neighborhoods until the end of July, in an effort to reach any local address that did not return a 2010 Census form.

Local Census official Gloria Solomon said with the recent employee additions, approximately 400 census workers have been hired to work in Newton County for the Census, creating a temporary influx of much-needed income to local residents.

Henderson's son arrested again

Quinterious Henderson, 17, the stepson of Newton County Commissioner J.C. Henderson, was arrested once again for violating a temporary protection order filed against him by the parents of a 12-year-old girl.

Henderson was initially arrested and charged with aggravated stalking in January, when the father of the young girl came home and found him in the house with his daughter. However, the charges against him were reduced to criminal trespass and he was sentenced to 12 months probation with 30 days of that served in the Newton County Detention Center.
