Nonprofit hosts Jazz by the River

Newton County's not known for its vibrant night life, but next Friday, residents will have the opportunity to enjoy a picnic dinner by candlelight on the banks of the Yellow River while listening to the soothing sounds of jazz music.

The Washington Street Community Center, a local nonprofit group, is hosting its annual Jazz by the River concert fundraiser from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday, June 8, at the Porterdale Mill Lofts. The doors open at 6 p.m.

I remember in 1971, Frankie Valli, who had been singing on his own, had just reunited with the Four Seasons and they were touring the country.

On a warm Saturday in June, a friend and I went to Carowinds, an amusement park located in South Carolina, and joined 5,000 other devoted fans and sat through one of the most enjoyable concerts I had ever attended. During the middle of the concert, a horrific summer rain storm struck, and for 15 minutes, it rained so hard that you could barely see the covered stage and not one person left.

Porterdale Police start landlord association

In an effort to open the lines of communication between landlords and the city with the goal of improving the rental properties within the city, the Porterdale Police Department has established the Porterdale Landlord's Association.
