7 workers released in Atlanta bridge collapse

ATLANTA - Federal investigators were working through the weekend to start determining what caused a pedestrian bridge being built high above an Atlanta park to collapse, killing one man and leaving 11 other workers hospitalized, seven in intensive care.

Defiant Ill. governor names Obama replacement

CHICAGO - A defiant Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Tuesday named a black political trailblazer to Barack Obama's Senate seat, a surprise move that put the governor's opponents in the uncomfortable position of trying to block his choice from becoming the Senate's only black member.

Blagojevich's appointment of former state Attorney General Roland Burris injected race into the drama surrounding the embattled governor, who repeatedly sought to distance his selection from charges that he tried to sell the seat to the highest bidder.

Teen charged with arson

A Covington teen was arrested and charged with arson after a fire broke out Christmas Eve in a Project Adventure house on Spring Street, causing the evacuation of all the home's residents to another facility.

Firefighters received the call of a residential structure fire about 8 p.m. Dec. 24. The fire, which started in an unoccupied bedroom, was put out by the sprinkler system.

1 dead, 18 injured in US bridge collapse

ATLANTA - Workers building a soaring pedestrian bridge plunged dozens of feet Friday when the structure collapsed at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, killing one worker and injuring 18 others.

The workers were all atop the "canopy walk," an elevated pathway that reaches up to 40 feet (12 meters) high, when it gave way around 9 a.m., Atlanta fire officials said. Joggers, dog walkers and others were in an adjacent park, but no visitors were in the area of the collapse, authorities said.

Dust fire breaks out at cardboard plant

A fire broke out in the dust filtration system at the Alcovy Road plant of Smurfit-Stone, a maker of cardboard products, and was quickly put out by the sprinkler system this afternoon.

The Covington Fire Department received the call about 3 p.m. today for a fire alarm, which was changed to a structure fire call after plant personnel checked out the source of the automatic alarm.

Underground explosion rocks Savannah's downtown

SAVANNAH, Ga. - An explosion in underground electrical cables blew off manhole covers and started several fires in downtown Savannah Monday morning, prompting police to evacuate several businesses. No injuries were immediately reported, police said.

Police received calls around 8:49 a.m. reporting that manhole covers had been blown off at the an intersection in the heart of the downtown district, said department spokesman Gene Harley. About an hour later, firefighters had put out three separate fires where the covers blew off.

A home for the holidays

Newton County man got an early holiday present this year, thanks to members of the Newton County Homebuilders Association, who brought his home up to code Dec. 15. Because of the work, the home passed inspection Dec. 16.
