Famed sculptor Ike Hay dies

Ike Hay Jr., whose father, Isaac Kline Hay, along with brothers Sam M. Hay Jr. and W. Thomas Hay, was born in the old jail in Newton County, died Friday of an undiagnosed lung disorder at his home in Lancaster, Pa.

Salem Camp Meeting 2010

Campers from near and far braved the summer heat and joined fellow worshipers in a weeklong celebration of God's glory for the 182nd Salem Camp Meeting at the Salem Camp Ground in Covington from July 9 - 16.

The week's activities included music performances by local artists and choirs, classes for all ages, shirt tie-dying, swimming and slip and slide fun. Campers were awarded with ribbons for attendance and nick-nacks for memorizing scripture.

The measure of a man

There are scholarships and tournaments in his honor, a road and park bear his name, but the true testament to the man Billy Carl "B.C." Crowell are how many people he touched in his 86-years. With the passing of Crowell on July 16, Newton County didn't just lose a resident, it lost a living legend.

Crowell was born in Porterdale in 1923 at a home adjacent to the baseball field named in his honor, a field where he spent his youth playing baseball, a sport that would eventually get him a scholarship to Oglethorpe University in 1940. He ...

B.C. Crowell passes away

Local recreation legend Billy Carl "B.C." Crowell died this morning at 5:30 a.m. after a long bought with diabetes. His funeral will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church.

Crowell coached youth sports in Newton County for years and has dedicated hours to various organizations in the county.
