The history of Earth Day

Each year on April 22 the world celebrates Earth Day to recognize what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement back in 1970.

The goal of Earth Day 2012 is to "Mobilize the Earth." The original idea for Earth Day came from founder Gaylord Nelson who was a U.S. senator from Wisconsin. After witnessing the horrendous damage left behind by the massive 1969oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif., Nelson decided that it was time to stand up for Mother Earth.

Arrests for attempt to steal alcohol

One man and one teen were arrested early Thursday morning, after an observant delivery driver alerted authorities to two suspicious men hanging out around the back of Walmart.

When officers met with the driver, he explained that there had been approximately 25 burglaries in the Atlanta area in the last month, and when he saw the two men hanging out behind the store where no one should be, he called 911. Walmart management was also notified when the two entered the store around 2:57 a.m.

Piedmont Academy Class of '82 celebrates 30th anniversary

Piedmont Academy's Class of 1982 celebrated their 30th reunion by meeting at the school and afterwards enjoying dinner at Deptula's in Monticello. Sheriff’s Office to host pill drop

The Newton County Sheriff's Office will be holding their fourth annual pill drop April 28. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the NCSO will work with the National Drug Enforcement Administration to "Take Back" unused prescription pills, no questions asked.

The event will be held inside Walmart - both on Industrial Blvd. and on Salem Road. NCSO officials will be on hand to collect the potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. The service is free and anonymous for all Newton County (and surrounding area) residents with no questions asked.
