Williams elected to GMA board of directors

Covington Councilwoman Hawnethia Williams was elected to the Board of Directors for the Georgia Municipal Association during the association's annual meeting in Savannah June 25.

Williams will serve as president of GMA's 5th District. The district includes cities in the following counties: Jackson, Madison, Elbert, Barrow, Clarke, Oglethorpe, Morgan, Greene, Newton, Jasper, Walton and Oconee.

From the set of ‘42’

Filming crews dressed Ga. Hwy 11 to resemble 1950s America for the film '42.' The movie tells the story of Jackie Robinsion, who broke the black color barrier in Major League Baseball when he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Robinson is being played by Chadwick Boseman, who has mainly had smaller roles on TV shows, while the role of the famous Dodgers manager Branch Rickey is being played by Harrison Ford. Alan Tudyk, Christopher Meloni, Lucas Black and John C. McGinley are also starring in the movie.

Painting through summer

This summer, young artist have the opportunity to learn fine art skills that could last them a lifetime. Southern Heartland Art Gallery is offering its last summer art camp on July 16-19 for participants ages 6 through 12.

Ann Wildmon, Camp Director and one of the 18 artists working at the gallery, said these promising young artists will learn different fine art techniques. Campers will not be occupied with simple crafts involving macaroni and glue.

Baseball movie filming in Social Circle

Old-time baseball is coming to Social Circle Friday, as Legendary Entertainment is filming the final two scenes of the upcoming Jackie Robinson-inspired movie "42."

Crews will be filming at a private home and in downtown Social Circle at the corner of Cherokee Road and East Hightower Trail, according to a production letter to area residents and merchants.
