Richard Douglas Norton, 31, was arrested late Tuesday in connection with a fire that destroyed the home at 3126 Gaither St. earlier in the day.
Norton was one of the renters and, at this time, is believed to have set the fire for insurance purposes. He was arrested in Athens and charged with obstruction of justice Tuesday, but Assistant Fire Marshall said he planned to bring three other charges against Norton today including insurance fraud, arson in the first degree and criminal damage of property.
Born into a Fayetteville farming community in 1924, Lofton Lee Hill helped harvest cotton and corn until joining the CCC (civilian conservation corps) during the Great Depression. He helped complete the paratrooper jump school at Fort Benning, on Nov 11, 1941. Hill said, "Little did I know I'd be going through the same jump school in 1943."

As Diahann Thames got ready to leave her Covington home during Saturday morning's storm, she heard a loud "thump" which turned out to a tree crashing down on her driveway and narrowly missing her parked car. She was relieved she had already gotten into the car, but found her and her family blocked in.
Susie Loy (Jeffries) Gunn, 92, of Mansfield, passed away July 18. She loved gardening, traveling and spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Grady Gunn and parents Robert Lee and Lenora (Digby) Jeffries.
