As most people are aware, because I remind them regularly, I'm pretty awesome. I have handled this whole single mom thing like a champ. Christmas, however, was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It was hard to keep up the whole Elf on the Shelf, baking cookies, looking at lights (to whoever had the huge light display on Forrest Drive, thank you!), happy time that my son is used to. At least this first Christmas as a single mom/divorcee (almost) is over, and I am bound and determined that 2013 will not suck like 2012 ...

Kiwanis donates $500 to Salvation Army

The Kiwanis Club of Covington donated $500 in cash and 43 Kiwanians each sponsored a child for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree giveaway and spent around $50 a piece on each child. The Angel Tree Program is designed to provide everyday necessities, clothing and Christmas gifts to disadvantaged young children and the elderly. The local Salvation Army is located at 5193 Washington Street SW in Covington.

While dining recently at Outback Steakhouse in Conyers, my wife and I were having our usual pleasant chitchat with Shannon Smith, a long-time Outback employee and family friend, when he conveyed his admiration of "A Veteran's Story." Shannon said he loved the articles, especially the stories of our aging warriors of World War II, and asked if I'd consider writing a story about his grandfather, a British fighter pilot. You bet'cha.
