Berry pickin’ time

The local community knows exactly where to go each berry season for their supply of delicious fresh-picked blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. The Alcovy Berry Farm, located off Lackey Road, offers opportunities for customers to peruse through the farm to pick their own berries at prices much lower to those offered at regular supermarkets.

Alcovy Berry, owned by the Worley family, planted their first bushes in 2003 on a single acre of land. The berry farm has since grown to three acres, offering a variety of different berry types like Thornless Triple Crown, Arapaho, Navajo and Kiowa.

IDA donates to railroad cause to honor Fowler

Long-time Industrial Development Authority Member Rob Fowler III recently announced his retirement from the group responsible for facilitating the recruitment and expansion of industry.

As a thank you for Fowler's many years of service, the IDA donated $2,000 to the Newton County Trails-Path Foundation, because Fowler has been an outspoken advocate of purchasing the currently Norfolk Southern railroad and converting it into a trail.

Airport operation work session to take place Tuesday

Dixie Jet Owner Bob Riddell, who operates the Covington Municipal Airport, asked the city council to consider a new operating agreement, because he said the broad early termination clause makes him wary of investing in the airport's future.

"We kind of have a cloud over our head… to be able to pull our lease without cause," Riddell said.

NHS teacher tends to sea turtles over summer break

Not all teachers take a break during their summer break. Jim Stansell, environmental science and zoology teacher at Newton High School, recently completed two, four-day workshops on sea turtles and coastal ecology on Georgia's Sapelo Island. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve offered the trainings as part of its teacher training series.

Lee Edwards decided to take up bonsai cultivation as a hobby 16 years ago while visiting the bonsai collection at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. Since then, he has grown over 50 trees that reside beautifully in his backyard.
