A variance for a proposed 150-foot cell phone tower at 10816 Old Atlanta Highway has been heard but not yet approved by Newton County officials. A public hearing on the variance is scheduled before the Board of Zoning Appeals at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25. A story in Friday's Covington News contained incorrect information.

2010 Arnold Award winners announced

Oak Hill Animal Hospital charity drive a success

Even with the current economic downturn, Oak Hill community members proved that the Christmas Spirit still exists. In spite of high unemployment rates, furloughs and other financial strains, the Christmas Charity Drive at Oak Hill Animal Hospital has raised much-needed funds and supplies to benefit the Newton County chapter of the Humane Society.

The drive, conducted during the entire month of December, collected food, paper towels, pet carriers, cat litter and other necessary pet items, and raised a total of $150 in cash donations. Oak Hill Animal Hospital matched the contributions, making a $300 donation for needy animals in Newton ...

YMCA Boot Camp: be careful what you ask for

The Covington YMCA is getting ready for a new session of Boot Camp under the direction of Instructor Crystal Hounschell. This program is available to members and non-members of the YMCA. Boot Camp is a 12-week program which meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:45 p.m. Boot Camp will begin its 12-week session on Friday, Jan. 25, and will conclude with participating as a group in the YMCA's Annual Cheerios Challenge on April 17.

InVEST in the NCSO campaign - Jan. 15

The parents of recently injured Deputy Wesley Atha have organized a fundraising campaign to purchase these vests for every county deputy. Their fundraising goal is $113,000. Each vest costs between $500-$700, depending on the size. Each Friday The Covington News will publish a list of individuals, businesses and civic groups who have donated to the cause that week as well as the total amount raised. A group of Newton non-profits received a significant financial boost Thursday morning. The Newton Fund, a group that supports non-profits and philanthropy in general, held its annual grant reception and awarded $18,000 to seven needy and deserving local organizations.

Type O neg and B neg blood levels drop to emergency levels

As a result of the recent bad weather across the country, on the heels of the holiday season, the blood supply has drastically decreased in the Southern Blood Services Region. Type O negative and type B negative blood supplies have dropped to emergency levels and help is needed now. Since type O negative blood can be used for any patient when there is not time to determine the patient's blood type, it is crucial that there is a sufficient supply.

Passing the gift along: UnitedBank recently made donations to the Repairers of the Breach Fund and the Covington YMCA for the holiday season. For a second year, UnitedBank directors and employees opted to give these donations instead of receiving individual Christmas gifts from their organization.
