Children’s catch of the day

The Metro Atlanta Hawg Hunter Bass Club presents the 13th Annual Casting Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Georgia State Fishery off U.S. Highway 278 in Social Circle from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During the event, kids will be involved in a variety of activities. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the children will participate in a fishing contest, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. there will be a casting contest and lunch will be provided and served from noon. to 1 p.m.

Local dancers in NYC

Sunday three local area dancers from the Kidz-N-Step dance studio left for the ultimate dance experience in New York City. Deborah Hobbs, 16, Alex Sorohan, 15, and Maggie Beth Callahan, 14, have all competed for, and been hand selected by a panel of judges, to travel to New York.

Jennifer Andrews-Smith, owner and instructor and Kids-N-Step will be chaperoning the girls on their adventure in NYC. 'Vampire Diaries' crew to film on square Thursday, Friday

Update: The "Vampire Diaries" crew will be filming on the square from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday and from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday. There will be cameras, equipment and vehicles on the sidewalks, curbside and streets around the square, and the crew will be holding traffic intermittently for filming. There will also be temporary road closures on both days of filming. Highway named for Lamar Hays

The dedication ceremony for the Lamar B. Hays Memorial Parkway took place Thursday, July 16 at 4:40 p.m. in the Mansfield Community Center. This great honor was passed through the Georgia Senate and House by Sen. John Douglas (R.-Social Circle) and House Representative Doug Holt after Hays untimely death in March of this year.

Students compete for natural resources scholarships

The 48th annual Natural Resources Conservation Workshop was held June 7-11 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton. The workshop has graduated approximately 11,519 participants over the years and this year hosted 109 Georgia high school students including 10 students from the U.S. Virgin Islands along with two chaperones.
