NCSS Spelling Bee returns

The 2015 System Spelling Bee has returned, and The Newton County School System will host the annual event. Each of the system's elementary and middle schools will compete this year at Newton High School on Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. Students in grades four through eight are eligible to participate, with each school sending their own spelling bee champion and runner up to compete in the tournament.

Zombie sighted near Mansfield; residents urged to flee for lives

When the zombie apocalypse comes, even the small town of Mansfield might not be safe. Crews filmed for three days earlier this month along Highway 11, shooting footage for the pilot episode of "The Walking Dead," a six-episode series on AMC.

"The Walking Dead" is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics ; Kirkman is also helping produce the television series.

Georgia Department of Driver Services announces dates of July closings

All Georgia Department of Driver Services licensing and testing centers will be closed on Saturday, July 3. Customer Service Centers statewide will reopen to serve customers on Tuesday, July 6th. (All DDS customer service centers statewide are always closed on Monday).
DDS Administrative Offices in Conyers - including the customer service telephone lines - will be closed on Friday, July 2. These administrative offices (and the contact center) will resume operation on Monday, July 5th.

Fast thinking by citizen nabs three suspects in burglary

Fast thinking and keen observational skills by a neighbor nabbed three burglary suspects last week.
According to reports, a man called 911 around 1:48 p.m. June 16 and reported that three men were burglarizing a home off Dearing Road. The man reportedly gave excellent descriptions of the three suspects while speaking with dispatch operators as well.

Local man gets robbed after meeting woman from chat line

Two people were arrested in connection with a June 4 robbery that occurred after a man met up with a woman he spoke with on a chat line.

According to Newton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison, the man spoke with a female calling herself "Apple" on Quest Chat line, and after speaking with her for several days, set up a meeting at a clubhouse in the Neely Manor subdivision.
